Clinical Background & Workflow
The Skin Screening Implementation Guide supports standardized screening, documentation, and referral workflows for early detection of cutaneous malignancies, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
Clinical Screening Pathway
- Patient Risk Assessment: Assessment of individual risk factors including Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype (I–VI), UV exposure history, and family/personal history of skin cancer.
- Clinical & Dermoscopic Examination: Visual and dermoscopic examination of suspicious skin lesions using structured morphological criteria (such as the ABCDE criteria).
- Documentation: Capturing the finding using the
SkinLesionObservation and FitzpatrickSkinTypeObservation profiles.
- Triage & Referral: Escalation to teledermatology assessment, surgical biopsy, or ongoing longitudinal lesion monitoring.
Terminologies Used
- SNOMED CT: Standardized clinical finding concepts and anatomical body site locations.
- LOINC: Standardized observation identifiers and clinical scale answer sets.
